Assalamu Alaikum,
Two words: It’s tough. Life, college, fam–throw faith into the mix and it gets messy. Unfortunately, we mistakenly cleanse off what was meant to cleanse us. Our supersonic prayers on the third floor count little many times, especially with that encroaching class, lab, or last-minute assignment. In the chaos of student life, it’s hard to remember the words we utter right before saying our salams; “ash-hadu an-la ilaha ill-Allah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasoolullah” makes it debut on a stage unlike any other, incomparable to Lady Gaga, Drake, or Nicki Minaj’s stage because it’s infinitely bigger, grander, and more life-threatening. Between that class and our pass to the eternal life of bliss… lies the shahadah. It’s a phrase countless brothers and sisters worldwide utter to change their lives from temporary stays in Super Dunya Motel to eternal stays in THE Jannah Castle. Put simply: it’s deep. We want you to tell us how and why.
Take a deep breath, ask for help from your One & Only Confidant, Maintainer, and Friend Up Above, whisper the shahada from the deepest place in your heart (more than once if you have to)… and start withAllah’s name. Bismillah:
Write a fully developed essay about the meaning and significance of the shahadah. Discuss types of shirk, the importance of the Sunnah, and the meaning of ‘ibadah. Decorate your submission with personal anecdotes and references from scholarly sources. Please quote ayahs and hadiths from the Quran and Sunnah to support your thesis, and completely cite all your sources.
We will be giving $500 to a sister and $500 to a brother. To be eligible you must be a paid member of the UH MSA and you must be a student. Your scholarship will be evaluated based on 50% how active you were in the MSA this past semester and 50% how well written your essay is. The deadline for submitting your essay is December 31 11:59 p.m. If you have the chance you may hand it to us in person; however,
you may also submit it electronically to secretary@uhmsa.com.
